deschutes river fishing
Management changes at the big hydroelectric project that forms Lake Billy Chinook allow salmon and steelhead, including sockeye salmon, to be reintroduced into upper areas of the Deschutes and tributaries. Fall sees occasional BWO hatches which can bring fish up in the eddies. Belozer’s Whitewater Fishing was established in the early 1980’s, outfitting fishing trips on the lower 100 miles of the Deschutes river for native redside trout and steelhead. The river runs one hundred miles from the last dam to the mouth at the Columbia River and is designated as ‘Wild and Scenic’. Besides the steelhead, the Deschutes also is home to some of Oregon’s other famous anadromous fish. Those latter fish, including giants from Idaho’s Clearwater River that can hit 20 pounds, tend to temporarily inhabit in the lower miles of the river and then will back out of the Deschutes when cooler weather arrives in the fall and continue their inland migrations. This will list all the boat ramps and river access points. The Deschutes is prized as a floating line fishery. Renegades and Purple Haze are both favorites here.

Juniper and Sage are the predominate flora but Ponderosa Pines are also prevelant. There also are a number of other access points, more if you count some nice spots that require substantial hikes. The river from Bend downriver to Lake Billy Chinook may be closer to the vacation destinations of Bend, Sisters, and others, but this section flows through rugged and often private land, so access can be tough. At 100 miles long from the Pelton Dam north to the mouth where it confluences with the Columbia River this “lower” section of river is best described when geographically broken up into 3 sections: (1)we refer to the first section from Warm Springs to Maupin as the “upper” section of the Lower Deschutes (2) from Maupin to Mack’s Canyon is the “middle” section of the Lower Deschutes (3) from Mack’s Canyon to the Columbia is the “lower” section. The canyon is epic in every way. This where it gets a little tricky. A little rain, a little snow, a sunny day--any weather is perfect for a walk or run along this well-maintained river path. We have several areas to offer one day guide trips here for both Trout and Steelhead. Some of these steelhead are bound for the upper Deschutes itself, while others use the Deschutes as a temporary refuge from the much-warmer waters of the Columbia River. The new water regime, we should point out, has been controversial with anglers.

We are down there just about every day all season. Check it out before you try fishing the lower section. Sparkle Dun and Hackle Stacker work for these fish. The Upper Deschutes runs clear and cold. Wild rainbow trout must be released. There also are some protected bull trout in the lower section, below Big Falls west of Terrebonne. Fly & Field Outfitters offers trips for large and small groups. The Benham Falls area includes lots of whitewater, and whatever you do don’t try to boat through these falls, which can be deadly. The Deschutes River is one of the premier fly fishing rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The North end of Bend is the beginning of the Middle Deschutes. Beginning in the lower reaches and progressing upriver and into the short, cold days of late autumn, steelhead can be caught both on swung flies with Spey Rods or with large subsurface offerings under an indicator using single-hand rods. Some of the basic information listed below in this article will link to other sources of free information with more depth. Many anglers love Deschutes River steelhead for their fondness of surface or near surface presentations. Dave Hughes’ book “Deschutes” has inspiring photography and is informative for anglers. Additional equipment would be a good pair of waders for early and late season and studded wading boots. Leave it to us to guide you on this section and enjoy the best trout fishing the entire Deschutes River has to offer. Baits including salmon roe are often used to catch both Chinook and coho salmon, although lures are also employed, especially for coho. Don’t miss Northwest fishing news! The Lower Deschutes has been a must-fish destination for generations of anglers from around the world. There are some great floats through here, but note regulations that require you to get out of your craft to fish. Chinook salmon arrive in two runs here. Time on the water is worth a thousand fish. Coho salmon fishing is open here, but these mid-sized salmon are more of an incidental catch for people targeting the larger and more numerous fall Chinook during September and October. Below Maupin (River Mile 52):  Beginning in mid-July, when Steelhead start to enter the Mouth of the Deschutes, we focus our Steelheading efforts to the last 50-miles of the river, below Maupin, where the Deschutes meets the Columbia River at Biggs Junction.
